Marine scientist turned superyacht and private chef — with a lifelong love for the ocean, food and adventure.

Hi, I’m Jo.

Since I was a little girl, I always dreamed of becoming either a marine biologist or a chef. I never imagined that somehow, I would end up becoming both — cooking my way around the world while sailing the oceans.

Originally from Chile, I studied marine science and completed a PhD in New Zealand. The ocean has always been a huge part of my life, and today I work as a superyacht chef on rotation. When I’m off the yacht, I’m based in La Ventana, Baja California Sur, where I run my own private chef business.

Baja is home for me — a place where I can combine my love of food and the ocean. I spend much of my free time freediving and enjoying the incredible marine life in this "aquarium of the world".

Cooking for people from all over the world, from owner trips and charters to remote locations with limited ingredients, has taught me to be creative, resourceful and highly adaptable. My cooking style brings together Mediterranean, Latin American and Asian influences — fresh, healthy, colorful and full of flavor, with a focus on beautiful local and seasonal ingredients.

For me, food is about much more than what’s on the plate. I love creating memorable experiences, getting to know the people I cook for and bringing care, creativity and a personal touch to every table.

Food, the ocean and adventure — I feel incredibly lucky to have built a life around the things I love.

"Jo is nothing short of spectacular, and her care and professionalism know no bounds! We reached out requesting her to prepare brunch and dinner for a group of 10, and after we filled out an incredibly thoughtful and detailed food preferences form, she curated a (highly anticipated) menu that suited our tastes and included alternatives for those with dietary restrictions.

Throughout the planning process and in the lead up to our trip, Jo was very quick to communicate and readily had answers for all of our questions, including recommendations for a nearby grocery store. We were also immensely grateful for how accommodating Jo was, as she was more than happy to help us stock the pantry and pick up any necessities ahead of our meals with her.

When it came time for the brunch and dinner, Jo and her assistant were punctual and their service was impeccable! All the dishes Jo prepared were absolutely phenomenal, and the aguachile was a particular favorite of our group (the coconut chia pudding, mini tacos, and tres leches cake were also standouts).

Jo has such a warm and vibrant personality, and it shines through in her food as well. It’s very clear how much time, dedication, and love she puts into her craft, and we were so lucky to have been able to enjoy the two meals she prepared — we wished our schedule would’ve allowed for more. Even now, our group is still thinking about the wonderful dishes that Jo prepared for us, and we would heartily recommend her to anyone looking for an unforgettable culinary experience in La Paz!
